ABOUT

The earth has traveled a few dozen rotations around the sun since Al Ross & The Planets first formed in 1983. Based in London, the group’s current core lineup includes Al Ross (lead vocals, bass), David Brammer (saxophone), Terry Mascall (drums), Alex Mungo (ex-Then Jericho, vocals), Julian Mungo (acoustic guitar), and Marc Rapson (piano, Hammond organ, keyboards, percussion).

Recorded at London’s legendary Abbey Road Studios, the debut album The Planets One was released by AFR Records/Wienerworld in 2018. A pair of esteemed BBC Radio deejays greeted the album with enthusiasm — Janice Long called it “fantastic” while Chris Hawkins proclaimed “I can’t believe this is a debut album... highly recommended.” The band wasted no time in providing live support for the songs. They played a string of classic London venues including the Troubadour, Boisdale Canary Wharf, the Camden Blues Kitchen, and the Half Moon.

Recording commenced in January 2020 for a second album. “Facing huge obstacles in a horrendous year — with two members getting Covid —we managed to produce a truly great album,” Ross admits with understandable pride. “It was a great way to pass the hours rather than staying at home feeling depressed! We were able to create something positive out of 2020.”

To date, a pair of tracks from the upcoming album have been released digitally — “Something Changed My Mind” and “Checkin’ Out the Vibe.” The new album, Blue Crystal, will be released on CD and download via AFR/Wienerworld on September 10, 2021.
